What is Switchel you may ask? I have to admit that I only discovered this wonderful drink a couple of months ago but it has fast become a favourite. Switchel has quite a few nicknames including Haymaker’s Punch, Ginger-water and Swizzy. One might call it a fermented drink, but it is so simple to make and falls into the “fermented” category only because one of the main ingredients used to make it, is Apple Cider Vinegar (with the Mother), and you do leave it to “brew” for at least 12-24 hours in the fridge. The story goes that it may have originated in the Caribbean, or perhaps from an ancient Greek medicinal elixir, but wherever its origins, by the 18th century, “haymaker’s punch” was guzzled down by American farmers during long work days to keep cool and stay hydrated in the heat. Perhaps the first ever electrolyte sports drink LOL!

The beauty of switchel is that you can make it so many different ways, alter the amount of any of the ingredients to suit your taste, so there is sure to be a recipe that works for you and your family!

The basic ingredients include Apple Cider Vinegar, fresh grated or sliced ginger, a natural sweeter (I use raw honey and a little maple syrup), lime (optional), and filtered water. Apparently in the original recipes from the West Indies they used Molasses to sweeten their brew, so if you like molasses – then go for it! I happen not to like the flavour of molasses so you won’t find it in my elixir!

Apple Cider Vinegar (Braggs): A great natural source of minerals like calcium, magnesium and potassium, as well as beneficial bacteria and acids. While many people don’t love the strong flavor of vinegar by itself, it is perfect in this recipe when balanced with ginger, honey and lime. Curious about Cabbage?

Cabbage is one of my favourite vegetables, it is so versatile and budget friendly especially now (beginning of 2016) when the price of vegetables has skyrocketed!  Not only that, there are several varieties and colours to choose from, including green, purple and white, Napa, Savoy, Bok Choy to name a few, so you never get bored!  From making a salad to a main dish or side, there are so many delicious cabbage recipes to choose from. I find I am including this wonderful cruciferous counterpart in several of my weekly meals!  The cabbage is part of the Brassica plant family which include cauliflower, brussel sprouts, kale and broccoli.  Cabbage in particular provides very unique health benefits and I will discuss some of those in this post.

  • Cabbage has some of the highest amounts of the most powerful antioxidants found in cruciferous vegetables – phytonutrients that aid in the fight against cancer by stimulating detoxifying enzymes. I ♥ Chlorella!

Chlorella-Plus-un-gran-aliado-para-terminar-el-díaI really do, I LOVE chlorella!  I have faithfully included it as a part of my daily regime for many months now, and I have noticed a big difference in how I feel.  But more than that, I know that my body is being cleansed of all the junk I do not want inside of me.  In particular, as I work on losing my extra weight and my body releases toxins that have been residing in my fat cells (YUCK!).  Onward and upward to better health and living In the Pink 😉

Detoxification is a word we hear very often these days, that is a good thing, because there are many toxic side effects of living in this modern day world!

To combat the harmful and unwanted chemicals your body picks up through the food you eat, the air you breathe, and the water you drink, it is wise to develop a proactive plan. One of the most powerful parts of this plan is detoxification of the toxins you may have already built up inside your body.

DIY Deodorant

Yup, that is what I said… deodorant made in your very kitchen, no nasties in it, and the best part… IT REALLY WORKS!

I have to admit I was very sceptical when I first started this venture and made sure I always had my store bought stick deodorant as a back up. However, as time progressed and stinky pits was not a part of my daily experience, my confidence in this natural product has sky rocketed LOL.  I really wanted to get away from all the chemicals in commercial deodorants (aluminum, paragons, Propylene Glycol, TEA & DEA, Triclosan etc.) and finally I can!

I live in Canada, freezing in the winter and roasting in the summer. Hence the need for two variations of the same product. One that doesn’t turn into a cement like structure in the winter, and one that is not drippy in the summer. This is because coconut oil is the base for this recipe and it has a melting point of 24 °C (76 °F). No worries though, I have that covered!

Sprouting is so easy, simple and fun! It is like gardening all the year round so you can enjoy the powerhouse of nutrients on a daily basis.

And powerhouse is truly what they are!

When a seed is dormant many of the nutrients are locked away, but once the seed starts to germinate the dormant seed starts to become a live plant. Sprouts can contain up to 100 times more enzymes than raw fruits and vegetables allowing your body to extract more vitamins, minerals, amino acids and essential fats from the foods you eat. Enzymes are special types of proteins that act as catalysts for all your body’s functions and crucial to excellent health.

The quality of the protein in beans, nuts, seeds, or grains improves when it is sprouted. Proteins change during the soaking and sprouting process, improving nutritional value. The amino acid lysine, for example, which is needed to prevent cold sores and to maintain a healthy immune system, increases significantly during the sprouting process.

Bee Pollen – One of Nature’s Most Perfect Foods

Who would have thought that pollen collected by busy little bees would be one of the most nutritious foods we can eat?

Many years ago the Greeks and Romans referred to natural bee pollen as “the life giving dust” or the secret “ambrosia” eaten to acquire eternal youth.

In our modern times, scientists, gerontologists and nutritionists have rediscovered the benefits of bee pollen confirming the promotion of healing on many levels. Some nutritionists state that you could live adequately on bee pollen alone (not that I would want to, but an interesting thought!). Science shows that bee pollen has natural rejuvenating powers. The Importance of Protein

 

Protein is one of the building blocks that make up a large part of every cell in your body, including muscle, skin, bone, and hair. It’s also essential for building hormones, enzymes, and hemoglobin.

Protein is made up of smaller components called amino acids, some of which can be produced by our bodies, and others, which must come from the foods we eat. The ones that must come from our diet are called essential amino acids and include histidine, isoleucine, leucine, lysine, methionine, phenylalanine, threonine, tryptophan, and valine.

To Supplement or not to Supplement, that is the question!

If we lived in a perfect world, the answer would most likely be NO.  In a perfect world, our food sources and way of life would be more than adequate to take care of all our dietary and emotional needs.  Unfortunately, our modern day environment and lifestyle is so profoundly different than it was 100 years ago.  So much so, my belief supports the fact that supplementing our diet is absolutely imperative.

 

Over the years the quality of our food has diminished and become less nutritionally dense:

  • A decline in soil diversity and quality (and consequent decline in nutrient density of foods).  In 1948 a cup of spinach yielded 158mg of iron, today it yields 2mg of iron.  The soil cannot produce what it does not have!

The ancient Chinese discovered the health benefits of Kombucha tea more than 2,000 years ago; they called it an “immortal health elixir.”  Today, this tea has gained recognition around the world as a potent health beverage.  It is known to be effective in reducing the risks of certain health problems like preventing and fighting cancer, arthritis, and other degenerative diseases and promoting overall health.

Kombucha tea is made from the fermentation of a mixture of sweetened tea and SCOBY, which is a Symbiotic Colony Of Bacteria and Yeast (a.k.a. “mother” because of its ability to reproduce, or “mushroom” because of its appearance).
